Psychotherapy: One type of psychotherapy typically used is called exposure and responsive prevention. It works to teach a person to react to stressful situations with less fear and anxiety so that obsessive thoughts and compulsive activities are not necessary.
Medications: Typically antidepressants and/or antianxiety medications are prescribed. It takes up to 10 to 12 weeks for these medications to be effective and often produces side effects such as: headache, nausea or difficulty sleeping.
