Can homeopathy help bipolar disease?
Bipolar disease is no longer a condition that is unfamiliar to the most of us. Many people suffer from this sometimes disabling disorder both young and old. Although we all have our mental ups and downs, for the person with a bipolar condition these mood swings can range from totally normal to a manic attack on the other side.
If you know someone tormented by this disorder you are probably wondering what can be done to help. There are two distinct approaches to treat bipolar disease, allopathy which merely treats the symptoms of the disorder, or homeopathy. Of the two, homeopathy is uniquely suited in its ability to treat mental disorders in general and bipolar disease in particular.
Homeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like.” Simply stated, this means that a remedy must be capable of producing similar symptoms in a healthy person. Homeopathic medicines used for bipolar treatment are similar to those used for unipolar disorders such as depression and mania. Although the treatment of bipolar disorder is more difficult than unipolar disorder, homeopathy offers excellent long-term treatment options.
Successful homeopathic treatment relies on a few things. The experience and knowledge of the treating naturopathic physician plays a significant role in how successful treatment will be but the patient also plays a large role as well. Patients must accurately report symptoms to their physician as well as rigorously follow the prescribed treatment plan to achieve optimal success. It is also vitally important for patients to tell their physician about all medications and vitamins they are taking.
A bipolar patient under naturopathic care can also expect to make some lifestyle changes that might work to counteract the homeopathic treatment or make the condition worse. These changes may include restricting caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, spices or herbs.
The list of homeopathic medicines used to treat bipolar disorder is extensive but some the commonly used medicines for depression are anacardium, sepia, naja or natrum muriaticum. Some of the commonly used homeopathic medicines for mania are belladonna, stramonium, hyoscamus, tarantula or syphilinum. Sufferers of bipolar disorder must NOT attempt to self-treat. Although some of the suggested homeopathic medicines may be found in the local health food stores or vitamin/nutrition stores, only a licensed physician or certified homeopathic prescriber is able to determine the correct homeopathic medicine and dosage for your individual needs.
